Holiday Movies for Kids

The upcoming Thanksgiving weekend as well as the December holidays are the perfect time to head out to the theatres as a family and enjoy a movie! Here’s what we are looking forward to seeing at the Rowley house…..

Normally I do not include PG-13 movies in my “movies for kids” round-ups, but personally I am excited to see this Stephen Spielberg film based in part on the book Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, and my older kids would really like to see it as well. (In theatres now, rated PG-13 for an intense scene of war violence, some images of carnage and brief strong language)

Rise of the Guardians

This movie looks to be very promising- a film where Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny and The Tooth Fairy band together with Sandman to battle an evil spirit called Pitch! We have decided to plan our son Alex’s 7th birthday party around this film! (Opens Nov 21, Rated PG)

Life of Pi

The looks to be a beautiful film about a 16 year-old Indian boy’s passage to a new life in America aboard a freighter that ends in a shipwreck in the Pacific. He is left to fend for himself on a life raft with an orangutan, a zebra, a hyena and a Bengal tiger. (Opens Nov 21, rated PG)

Dino Time

Finally an animated film geared for the younger kids! This one centers on three kids for accidentally travel by time machine back to the time of the dinosaurs, only to be treated as baby dines to a new-Mom giant T-Rex! (Opens 12/7, rated PG)

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

We saw a preview to this film recently (when my husband and I ventured out on a date to see Batman) and it looks spectacular. So far, I have not been able to entice my kids to read the Hobbit series, but maybe seeing this film will draw them into the characters and inspire them to tackle the books too. (Opens Dec 14, Not yet rated)
