While I enjoy some time off with my family, I would like to share with you some of my favorite blog posts from the past. So here is today’s Momof6 Memory…
While I certainly enjoy the process of reflection and making New Year’s resolutions for myself…. there is a part of me that hesitates when it comes to sharing that process with my children. I guess that I really don’t want them thinking that any part of them needs reflection and revision at the start of the New Year…… it’s not that I think they are perfect- they are kids like any other….. it’s just that I want them to enjoy the fun of childhood minus any self-examination….
Anyway- we have come with up with a different way of recognizing the start of a new year with our children. Instead of making New Year’s resolutions- we make New Year’s predictions! On New Year’s Day- during dinner, we go around the table, and everyone can come up with as many predictions as they would like for the new year. Some of them may involve things that the kids would like to / and think that they can achieve- such as “I will learn to ride my bike without training wheels” or “I will score three goals in a soccer game this year” or “I will learn to tie my shoes.” And some are more aspirational, such as “I predict that we will get a new pet”, or “I predict that I will we go on a trip to somewhere warm”….
I am the note-taker at these meetings, and I write down all of our New Year’s predictions, and then place them into a sealed envelope – which gets put away until New Year’s Day next year. The fun part is opening the envelope from the prior year, and reading what each person predicted and whether or not their prediction came true!

So creative! I’m trying not to make any resolutions but instead make better life choices that will hopefully stick better than resolutions ever do.
