Family Routines: The Perfect Morning Routine for Your Family!

Webster’s defines the word routine as “a regular course of procedure ” or a habitual or mechanical performance of an established procedure”.  My Mom’s definition of routine is “a list of steps to follow at a specific time of day that keeps your family moving along to your end goal, without having Mom lose her mind, raise her voice, or pull out her own hair”.

Having a clear morning routine allows everyone in the family to know what their responsibilities are and what is expected of them.  Obviously the end goal for our morning routine on a school day is to get out the door in time to meet the bus.  I know that in our household, everyone’s day gets off to a much better start if we can leave our house in a calm manner, instead of having a Mommy shrieking at the kids as we run out the door in a panic.

Even on weekends, we stick to some parts of our morning routine, but we just adjust the time frame to match whatever our plans are for the day.

Give yourself time-based deadlines by working backwards through your routine:

I think the place to start when planning your morning routine, is to plan the time you need to exit the house, and work backwards from there.  I personally prefer that my children ride the bus to school- it forces my children to learn and respect the concept of “being on time” every day, which is a skill that will serve them well for the rest of their lives.

At our house, the bus comes at 8:25am, so I have set our goal to be in my car by 8:15am.  We need to drive down the street to our bus stop, and I like to be at the stop 5 minutes early.  I also plan 5 extra minutes of “cushion” – which we end up using almost every day to run back into the house to grab another sweatshirt, retrieve the forgotten backpack, etc.

Working backwards, I know that we need to have our breakfast completed by 8am, which gives us 15 minutes to brush teeth, comb hair, make one last trip to the bathroom, get shoes and coats on, and gather backpacks.  And if we want to complete breakfast by 8am, the kids need to be downstairs, dressed, and at the table by 7:30am, and any hot food such as eggs, need to be made and served by no later than 7:45am.  The kids need to finish eating, clear their plates and load them into the dishwasher by this 8am deadline.  At the same time, I need to finish preparing the packed lunches and snacks, and the kids to help me in loading up their backpacks and get them out by the front door- again by 8am.

Which makes our latest wake-up time 7:15am.  And that is also the time when I need to have myself ready to focus just on the kids and on helping them along.  I have found that mutli-tasking (getting myself dressed while trying to rouse my later sleepers and help the younger ones get dressed), just ramps up my stress level, and makes me less patient with my little sleepy-heads!

Some Keys to Success:

  • “Put your own mask on first, before helping others”-  We’ve all heard these words before taking off on an airplane, and the same advice goes for us at home.  As the Mom and leader of this family pack- I need take care of myself first in the morning before moving on to get everyone else ready.  At a minimum, I absolutely must have a few moments to make myself a cup of tea, check my weekly planner clipboard to review the day, and read my email- this is what I need for my own sanity.  But what I strive to do most days is to also sneak in some exercise time, and give myself some room to take care of anything that I might not have finished the night before (laying out the kids clothes, getting lunches and snacks ready, etc).  So yes, this means that I need to get up early….  very early….. Most days I try to be out of bed by 5:45am.  I do this because it is what works for me, and I am happiest when I have found the time to exercise, and my home feels organized and prepared for the day.
  • Set yourself up for less stress, and help your kids to be as self-sufficient as possible- When the kids were younger, we found it easiest to have one room (Mom & Dad’s bedroom) where everyone gets dressed in the morning, so we lay out our clothes there the night before.  In the morning the kids can just come in and get themselves ready as they wake up.  We have tried to make it a “house rule” that no one goes downstairs in the morning until they have done this step.  We use two different bathrooms for teeth brushing (it speeds up the process), and each child has a tray in the vanity drawer with their own toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss- so that they can go right to their station and get ready.  And each child has their own bin in the coat closet with just their shoes, so they can find their own shoes and put them on in the morning.
  • Make sure that everyone knows what is expected of them-  for younger ones it might be helpful to start out with a picture-based checklist that they can follow until the routine becomes a habit.  For older children who can read, a written checklist will work nicely.  Once the kids know and are following their routine, you can eliminate the checklists.

The Must-Have Morning Routine Tool:

  • Clocks-  Since I have worked our morning routine around set “deadlines”, I need to be able to keep one eye on the clock- which means havng one in each room that we use in the morning to get ready.  If I see that it is 8:05am, and we still have  a few kids at the breakfast table, I know that I need to move them along.  This school year, I even added a small battery powered clock to our bathroom so I can keep an eye on it while I am helping the younger ones brush their teeth.  I also believe in having the kids set and use their own alarm clocks to wake them up in the morning (although in our house this only applies to my older children- my young ones all seem to spring out of bed waaaaaaaaaay before 7am!)

This routine is perfect for my family! Thank you so much for this blog. 5 of my 6 children are in school and I sometimes fail to get myself together first before starting their routine. The hardest part is to get them up on time. What I really hate to happen is when one of the girls can’t find their shoe or the teenager is still in the bathroom doing her hair or taking a shower. And I hate when this happens>> when one of the children is in the bathroom doing, well, you know, which totally destroy the time frame!

Sharon – thanks for this! I love hearing how other moms with large families do things. (we have 5)
I have always used the same method for figuring our what time to get up . . .work backwards. I remember one mom of 2 who was amazed that I was at her door on time to pick her up for MOPS and she was always running late when I had 4kids and she had two. I asked her what time she got up . . And soon found out why. She was still trying to keep her old morning routine and schedule, but with 2 kids now that didn’t work. When my kids were little I found that if I added an extra 30 minutes per kid to my wake up time, we never had a problem getting out the door in time. this gave me time to nurse, change diapers, deal with unexpected events (diaper blowouts, spilled cereal bowls, etc, etc). And yes, I means you can no longer get up 45 mins before leaving time, but are getting up 3 hours some times before heading out the door! And yes, I got myself completely ready before focusing on the kids. Now that they are older (8-17) that isn’t always the case anymore.
Oh last thing . . . I love the idea of separate show bins in the coat closet so they don’t have to rummage through every else’s, but you must have a very big coat closet! :)

Hi Lori- As much as I would love to wake up just 45 minutes before we need to head out the door…. it just doesn’t work on a school day. And then you end up yelling at everyone to hurry up and the kids are frazzled before they even get to school! So it just makes so much more sense to get up super early, get myself ready and then start helping the kids along. I hope the Mom of 2 that you shared this with learned from your wisdom!

Yes- we do have a big kids coat closet- so we do have room for shoe bins for each child. It really helps to keep us organized.

Our morning routine is really calm. As soon as my elementary kids (three of these little buggers) finish their homework after school they pack their back pack and hang it up by the front door. I wake them up at 7am every day and they spend half an hour stretching, getting dressed, putting shoes on, and brushing teeth/hair, washing their face, and as much as I hate to admit it sometimes teasing each other. Everyone eats breakfast at school because it helps them leave their home mindset at the door and get their school mindset in place.

My high school kids (two) are completely responsible for their schedules as long as a few rules are followed. 1) All homework must be completed before bedtime (and this includes Fridays too, I hate having to leave events early to get homework done on a Saturday or Sunday). 2) They have to remember that two of them are sharing the same bathroom (my daughter takes a shower at night and my son in the morning as a result). 3) If they miss the bus, it better be for a good reason or I will start scheduling their morning.

My 6th child has graduated, works two jobs, and is getting ready to start college. I stay out of her schedule, she asks for help if she needs it.
