It seems as if snowstorm after snowstorm has been barreling through most of the country this winter- and as I am writing this, we are facing down yet another snow day off from school thanks to Winter Storm Pax. If you are like me, you’ve already exhausted the list of indoor-kid-entertainment ideas at your disposal at least three storms ago. So what’s a Mom to do when staring down yet another day locked in the house with the kids? Especially when she’s has work to do? Here’s 5 cool ideas to help you survive yet another snow day!
1. Make Snow Ice Cream
Since you’ve got a fresh covering of the white stuff, why not put it to good use and make some snow ice cream? Made with just four ingredients that you are certain to have on hand (milk, sugar, vanilla, and snow!)… this is an easy thing to do! Check out the recipe over at Family.com!
2. Watch a Move They’ve Never Seen
Commonsensemedia.org has pulled together a series of awesome lists that you can use to find a great family movie that your kids have never seen. You can see ideas for movies for PreTeens, Movies Based on Comic Books, Horse Movies for Kids– trust me, they have a list for every age and every interest. Find a few that you think your kids would like, and then head over to Netflix or Amazon to see if any of them are available for live streaming. During our last snow day we watched “October Sky” which none of us had seen before, and we all loved it!
3. Learn a New Card Game
If you’ve grown tired of “Go Fish” and “Crazy 8’s”, it’s time to teach your kids a new card game. A current family favorite is “Nertz” that is kind of like solitaire played at a fast pace as a group, (but be warned- you’ll need a separate deck with a unique design for each player), and “Spoons“. Both games are easy to teach kids to play, and are fun for a group!
4. Make a 2-Minute Mug Cake in the Microwave
Mug cakes are so simple to make that kids can create them on their own. Just make sure they allow them to cool for a few minutes before digging in!
5. CD Maze
If you have some bendaroos hanging around, a few marbles, and some old CD cases, this is an easy craft that can keep kids busy for hours- creating mazes and playing with each other’s maze!
