I just love situations when I have a chance to experience my family in a whole new light. When the kid who think he is “the smartest” gets put in his place by the kid who struggles in school. When the kid who think he is “the coolest” gets his hat handed to him by the kid who is definitely “the silliest”. When the adult who is supposed to be the one to set the good example for the kids, is the one who is rolling on the floor laughing instead.
That, my friend, is why family game night ROCKS!
If you choose the right game- one that is a fair mix of luck of the dice (or cards), that is balanced against a small amount of skill- it levels the playing field. So it doesn’t matter if you are 9 or 49… you can compete fairly against one another. Our family flips back and forth between card games (like “Nertz” or “Spoons”) and traditional board games. But recently we had a chance to take one of our favorite board games- Monopoly, and play it interactive-style on our Xbox… and let me tell you- it totally changes the game!
The cool thing is that it the Monopoly board- the entire Monopoly city is displayed in 3D on the screen, and when the game pieces move, the board turns so you can see what’s ahead. When you start the game, you can even modify some of the “house rules” to more closely mirror the way your family plays the traditional board game version. So if you usually play Monopoly with the rule that all taxes and penalties are put into the middle of the board and collected by a player if they land on “Free Parking”, you can do that. If you usually play the game where a player gets double their salary if they actually land on the “GO” space (rather than jut pass “GO”), then you can do that too. And playing the Plus version of the Xbox actually speeds up the game a bit, as your money is counted (and added or taken away from your holdings) for you, and you can use the “speed die” so the dice are rolled for you and the game pieces proceed according to the roll.
Monopoly Plus is available from the Hasbro Game Channel and can be downloaded directly to the Xbox (Don’t worry- your tech savvy kids will know exactly how to do this!). You can download any of the Hasbro Game Channel games- Monopoly Plus, Risk, and Trivial Pursuit Live to the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation®3, PlayStation®4.
Trust me- if you give this a try for your next family game night activity- I think you’ll agree with me…. Monopoly Plus is even better than peanut butter on toast!
