Got Goals?

Listable Life: 5 Goals

During last week’s blog-cation, which was spent enjoying a fantastic get-away with my family to the White Mountains of New Hampshire (more details on that later this week!), I was able to set aside a little bit of time one morning, that I spent by myself in reflection. Looking back on the year so far and the summer that I am enjoying with my family, and then considering the start of the school year that lies ahead of me…. and what I would like to accomplish between now and the close of 2012. So I set a few fall goals for myself…..

Goal #1: Direct more attention and energy to my commitment to be healthy

I think this is roughly the 4th time this year that I have “announced” here or on my Momof6 facebook page that I intend to cut out the junk food and processed foods, and start exercising regularly. So here it is again. And yes, I have a plan…. I have actually written out a schedule for daily exercise. I have my food journal ready to go and an eating plan to follow. And yes, I am cutting chardonnay out of my regular food groups (at least for now).

Goal #2: Set some stronger work / life boundaries

Even as I type this goal, I am up at 5:30am typing on my laptop in bed. Most evenings you will find me working in bed from 9-11pm, and this summer- it’s been every early morning too. And when I work like this, I read less, I spend less time just hanging out with Steve, I spend less time on myself. It’s not the balance I am looking for. Perhaps I should ban my laptop from my bedroom……  (nah- that’s just crazy talk!)

Goal #3: No more multi-tasking after school

Unless that multi-tasking involves juggling carpools and kids schedules. But no more trying to get one more twitter party done, one more post written, one more email sent during the time that I should be working with my kids on homework and helping them with reading and math. Perhaps I should ban my laptop from the kitchen too!

Goal #4: Get back to focusing on my Momof6 goals!

So in May I delivered this presentation at Bloggy Boot Camp Philly on how to grow your blog traffic…. and pretty much ever since then I have watched my traffic fall. I have stopped using my own formula of examining and tweaking internally and externally to improve Momof6. And while I do not think that the blog is going to get a physical makeover this fall (as it did last year), my facebook page sure needs one! But I do need to re-focus my content to get “back to my roots” of organizing a Mom’s life! And I have been doing almost no external work- such as guest posting, contributing to link ups, etc. It’s time to start executing some of the ideas that have been brewing in my brain!

Goal #5: Earn $ for the kids college fund!

I love, love, love the work that I am doing for iVillage right now as the coordinator for the iVoices program and for iVote. And I am hoping that we have laid some groundwork this summer to make this program bigger, more focused, and gain additional opportunities for the women and men who contribute to iVoices. Oh yeah- and this work allows me to earn income which gets funneled immediately into my kids college fund. There is no understating the importance of this to me!

This is perfect timing for this post. Most people start their “New Years’ Resolutions” on Jan 1. I usually shoot for the first week of school. I feel like it is a good time with the kids and I to start better habits. Thanks for the ideas!

I totally agree with you Erin…. the first week of school is exactly like Jan 1st to me too! A time to start fresh with good intentions and give the year your best shot!

Yup, sounds like me. I know from last year that after school time is definitely kid time. I’m not sure what to do about during the day since I’ll still have one little home. We did pretty well last year if I worked at the dining room table. Over the summer, I had to stay in my office and close the door, but I could only work for an hour or so. Not much more.

I’m moving towards doing my strength workouts in the morning, rather than after dinner. It’s okay to walk/run at 5:30 am, and then do 30 day shred or the corebody reformer afterwards. During school time, that’s a bit tougher, though both workouts are easy to interrupt.

If you need some inspiration about living healthy, I started a linky on Mondays called Motivation Monday – healthy living, recipes, and personal growth posts.

Thanks for sharing your goals! I think it’s wonderful that you’re not waiting until New Year’s to think about them! My military family moves around a lot, so goals tend to change based on where we are and what’s possible to accomplish while we’re there. Currently, we’re in Singapore. My goals so far are to explore the country, travel to neighboring ones, learn about different cultures and take a photography class so that I can document it all! I think this chapter in my life will not only be a great learning experience for me, but my family as well!

Cheers,
Kristina

Hi Kristina! I love your plans for appreciating and exploring Singapore…. my family and I have traveled to China three times, and I can’t wait for the chance for us to go back and spend an extended amount of time there. Learning about another culture and talking and learning from the local people is just an incredible life experience!
