You truly cannot be a organized human being unless you use a good calendar system! And if you’re still someone who likes to keep all of their appointments, activities, and reminders on a paper calendar- I highly encourage you to consider tossing out the paper and find an electronic calendar system that works for you.
Reasons to Use an Electronic Calendar System
One of the most beautiful things about electronic calendars is that they can be synced, so you can have your calendar on your smart phone, your tablet, your laptop, as well as it can sync to your husband’s electronic calendar and your kids’ calendars. So no matter where you are- you can easily look up and see what your current appointments are for any given day. And the important people in your life can know the latest schedule and commitments too- without coming home and consulting the kitchen wall.
The other great thing about electronic over a paper calendar is that you always have a backup copy. Since it syncs- to your myriad of devices as well as to “the cloud”, a copy is available to you even if you were to lose your smart phone or tablet. You can’t say that about a paper wall calendar- not only is it not portable… if you happen to leave it behind somewhere- you are in big trouble!
Which Electronic Calendar Should You Choose?
There are lots of electronic calendars available- a free version that is available to everyone is Google Calendar, which also syncs up nicely to all of your electronic devices. And if you’re an Apple user (as I am) you can use Apple’s iCal system. It’s already pre-loaded on all Apple devices, it syncs beautifully to one another and to “the cloud”, and you can also sync it to other people’s iCals, and Google calendars. And what I really love- it also allows you to print copies of your weekly schedule or even your monthly calendar- a very nice feature- especially for someone who still likes that old paper wall calendar!
How Your Electronic Calendar Can Make You “More Organized”…
Here’s the key to making any calendar- electronic or paper- work for you. You have to use it completley and exclusively! You have to learn to rely on it, and it has to be the “container” for absolutely all of your appointments, notes, and reminders. If you continue to use Post-it notes stuck everywhere throughout the house, you’ll never be able to fully rely on your calendar as the “go to” resource for your organized life. And you’ll risk falling through on a commitment.
I recommend that once a week, perhaps on Sunday night, that you sit down and spend some time reviewing your calendar for the upcoming week. Make sure that all appointments, and reminders are in your calendar, adjust your schedule where needed, and know what you need to accomplish in the week ahead.
