The 5 Best Shopping Apps! {Save $, Shop Smarter #7}

When I put the question to readers out of the Momof6 facebook page asking “What is your biggest shopping challenge when it comes to saving money?”- the overwhelming response was “It’s hard to know if you are really getting the best deal available when you purchase”. Luckily…. there is an app for that!  So here are the 5 best shopping apps that you should have on your smartphone right now!

#1. Favado

Favado is the app to help you save money while grocery shopping. It takes the best of a deal-matching site, combines it with a grocery list app, and puts it all on your smartphone. You tell Favado what local stores you want to shop at, and the sales items and prices are immediately available for you to browse. You can add items to your grocery list as you go. The app even tells you if there are newspaper or online coupons that you can use to score an even better deal. (And no, you can’t print the coupons directly from the app- but you can email yourself your shopping list and open it on your computer and print the online coupons from there).

Shop for Kids

#2. Shop for Kids by

This amazing app was created by the smart folks at TimetoPlayMag, and it is the best app to use when shopping for kids toys! Not only can you search the database for the best possible price, but you can also read TimetoPlayMag’s reviews of the prduct, watch videos so you can truly understand how the toy functions, and you can also click through to purchase it online right from the app.

Red Laser

#3. Red Laser

Red Laser is a price comparison app that allows you to look up an item, and compare prices both a store located near you as well as online. You can also scan the bar code if you are standing there in the store and are wondering whether or not an item is truly at it’s best price (think of how handy this will come in on “Black Friday’!) You can even purchase the item right from within the app!

The one thing I want to point out is that when I tested the app, I found that it wasn’t always giving me the best prices or even a full list of online availability. I searched for the Disney Infinity playset for the Wii, and the only online listing that came up was on Ebay for $99.99. But when I used my latop to conduct a Google search for the same item- I found that this is available in many stores online- at a retail price of $59.97. So be aware that no system is foolproof!

Buy Via

#4 Buy Via

Buy Via works more like a deal site- showing you which stores are having sales today- and what the best deals there are out there. Originally launched as an app for deals on electronic items like tablets and smartphones, Buy Via has expanded to include apparel, accessories, sporting goods and more. You can search local stores and see what coupons and deals are available and then click on the coupon to display it so it can be rung at the register. You can also scan a bar code or a QR code to conduct price comparisons. And a really cool feature is they have an entire section dedicated to Black Friday shopping!

#5 Slice

Slice is the ultimate app for tracking the shipping of your online purchases. Slice connects to your email account and searches through your emails looking for product purchase notifications. It then tracks shipping on everything you’ve purchased, so no more wondering about whether you’ve received all of those orders you placed on Black Friday! Slice keeps a list of those purchases in its database and will notify you if an item you’ve recently purchased has now gone on sale (go back and request that price adjustment!) or if a past purchase has been recalled.

Note- at this time, the app only works with Gmail, AOL, and Yahoo mail accounts. Eventually they plan to add the ability to link in other types of email accounts.

free, available for iPhone, Android, as well as a Web version

    Hey Sharon, I don’t have a shopping app but I do have one that I think mommies would appreciate! I hope it’s ok that I post that here….It’s called Ringya, you can find it by going to and it just helps moms/dads communicate with all the other moms about school stuff without actually having to call all the other mothers! You can share recipes, send mass messages to everyone about after school sports activities and well you get the drift. It’s been a life saver! Thanks for the awesome read and good luck to all the mommies out there! 🙂
