Dishing About the Dishwasher…

Dishing About the Dishwasher

I was pretty jazzed that our new-to-us house had a kitchen with a Miele dishwasher. Sure it has this odd faux-wood exterior, but I was pretty stoked that this machine would get my dishes super-clean! And it does what it is supposed to do- even when my kids are lazy and don’t pre-rinse the dishes before they load them, most of the time the dishwasher cuts through the crud. (Winning!)

But sadly, our dishwasher comes with a few quirks.

For one thing- either my kids are using a heck of a lot more dishware than they used to…. or this dishwasher has a below-average storage capacity. Because even though I’m running the sucker 2-3 times a day (like after every. single. meal.), there’s always a stack of dishes left on the counter that won’t fit into the dishwasher!

Which becomes a never-ending cycle….. the dinner dishes don’t all fit, so when I am loading the dishwasher the next morning, the breakfast dishes won’t all fit… so there is always something left out on the counter.

And for some reason all the plasticware that I wash never comes out dry- even if it’s been sitting in the dishwasher overnight. I end up having to give it a little “airtime” on my kitchen counter before I can put it away. (‘Cuz it’s not like I am going to take the time to dry it by hand!)

Even the rolling drawers inside of the dishwasher are quirky…. the wheels don’t like to stay in the tracks, so if you pull too hard- the drawer flies right out of the dishwasher and onto the floor (not good when it’s fully loaded!). The little prongs that stick up are bent every which way way so it seems as if I am constantly adjusting them to get them to work with my dishes.

So I ask you my friends- when faced with a situation like this- where all of your dishes won’t fit into the dishwasher after a meal, do you take the time to wash the extras by hand? Or do you let them sit out until the next time you load the dishwasher (knowing that loading time is only just a few short hours away)? Or is this just one of those “big family problems” that you can’t relate to? (Like wondering how the hell a meal at Applebee’s just cost you $200?)

Leave me some answers/comments/laughs at my expense please!

Hi Sharon,

I also have this problem and I end up washing the dishes if they do not fit. My creative placement to try use every square inch of dishwasher cleaning is done before I wash by hand. LOL

Glad to hear it is not just us as well.

I totally agree on working every square inch of space in the dishwasher! Am I am truly torn between wanting to have the whole kitchen cleaned up, and not wanting to waste my time washing them by hand. Now of course I KNOW the obvious answer is to get my kids to do it….. but the amount of nagging (um, I mean encouragement) that would take is just beyond the scope of my patience right now!

Oh….it would be a double job to have them help. Mine are teenagers. I do also do cookware, I cannot stand leaving them in the sink waiting for a second load.

We are redoing/revamping our kitchen island and I am adding another dishwasher there. Hopefully that will help.

Are you feeling moved in? Sharyl

I handwash most of our plastic containers & lids because they never dry either. I figure if I’m going to give them “air time” (love that term!) then I might as well just wash them and have their air time right away. That gives me more space in the dishwasher for our actual dishes, which means less handwashing overall. I also wash most pots & pans and any odd shaped dishes that don’t fit nicely (like those bowls I see in your picture). I’d rather wash a few things than have to wash a whole bunch of regular dishes that didn’t fit in the dishwasher because the odd shaped ones were taking up so much space. I’m lazy when it comes to hand washing LOL. I’m slowly trying to weed out our odd shaped dishes though… or have strategically put them further back in the cupboard so the regular ones are used more often. I’m only dealing with a family of 4, but I think these things will help your dishwasher be utilized better.

I too hand wash pots and pans…. and my bowls are definitely taking up more room than they should in the dishwasher. But I just don’t want to hand wash anything other than my Calphalon….. sigh….

I hand wash large items that would take up too much space in the dishwasher and load it as full as possible. Then I wash whatever’s remaining and I leave it in the drainer to dry.

I’ve thought about perhaps investing in a drainer too….. but then I think that I feel compelled to handwash everything that doesn’t fit…. not sure I want to make that commitment! :)

Was I ever glad to read this post! I have an almost 4 year old and 8 year old so we have some plastic cups in our house and I wash them on top rack of dishwasher and the never ever come out dry…ever! I end up lining them up to ‘air dry’ too in between this little space between my little oven and the sink. Glad I’m not alone and I’ve just come to terms that plastics are not going to dry well in the dishwasher and so it is what it is! Thanks for posting this as it was a question I was going to ask the Moms of my local MOMS club!!

I think if one of us could invent plastic ware that actually dries in the dishwasher- we would have millions of Moms wanting to buy it! We have a real business idea here!
