All of this talk about carbs and dieting and exercising have made me really think about how this applies to kids and the messages we send to our kids about eating well to nourish our strong bodies, about exercising and about body image itself. So as part of the Just Dance, Just Sweat ,Dream Team Challenge, I created this video that shares my feelings about all of this….
I really am so glad that my kids and I are taking this challenge. Just Dance is a really fun way to get our bodies moving together as a family, and do it in a natural game-playing kind of way. I don’t know if this is what Ubisoft had in mind when they created these games, or if they were picturing kids and teens playing mainly with their friends…. but dancing together as a family is so much better than just telling kids they should exercise and signing them up for sports. It demonstrates that moving your body is important at every age.
Do you think about how your communicate and demonstrate to your kids examples of how to live a healthy lifestyle? If so, please leave a comment and share it here!

I think about this alot. I grew up in a family where food was basically the devil yet an active life style was not necessarily encouraged. My kids and I also dance together and have so much fun doing it. The other area. I am trying to tread carefully is using food as a reward. I have to fight my natural instinct of soothing my children by offering them some kind of snack!

I know…. I can use food as a reward too. And certain kids in my family aren’t big eaters- so I act as a “food pusher” for them, and then others want to eat more than is healthy for them… so I end up trying to re-direct them. I think if I did a better job of modeling good eating habits rather than just directing food I might be more successful.

I love the video! And, lots of great questions to ask ourselves and to talk to the kids about.
I don’t think I’ve ever talked much about losing weight in front of my kids. Most people wouldn’t think of me as needing to lose weight, though I’ve had that elusive 5 to 10 lb. goal ever since I stopped having more kids. However, I was surprised to hear my own daughter mention that she needed to lose weight. She’s a beautiful, healthy 5 year old who does NOT need to lose weight. As her mom, I need to make sure she’s hearing healthy messages from me as much as she’s hearing and seeing other messages from the society around her.
