Help Me Makeover My Guest Room!

Guest Room Makeover

Okay readers…. I need your help today! I want to makeover our guest room into a space that is warm and inviting for the grandparents, aunts, and uncles and cousins who come to stay with us. The bedroom we have for guests at our new home is a little small, but it fits our queen-sized bed nicely along with a dresser and room for one night stand.

But here’s some of the work that we need to do:

Guest Bedroom Work Help Me Makeover My Guest Room!

1. Repair the dresser that was damaged during the move (a piece of the trim broke off). Install the mirror over the dresser and hook up the small TV so that guests can watch Jimmy Fallon in bed!

2. The closets need some work. Right now the main closet functions as a linen closet as well as storage for toiletries. I will still need it to do all of this as well as provide some hanging space for our guests to hang their clothing. And we need some hooks on the back of the closet door.

3. The small closet to the side of the bed is also used as linen closet space for the house…. so this just needs to be repainted.

4. The door to the closet needs a “real doorknob”. I think…. or maybe not? The one on the door it literally a handle bolted into the door. Kinda ugly.

5. When we get to the point of painting the trim- it’s going to take some time…. the floor heater was painted yellow and even the switch/socket plates were painted in stripes to match the wall!

6. The room needs a light fixture. Right now it is just a bare bulb recessed in the ceiling.

And the closets are showing some signs of past water damage. The drywall is completely dry now… so I think all we need to do is to clean up and repaint the walls.

Let’s Start By Choosing the Bedding!

I don’t know if this is just what has happened at our house… or if everyone who has a guest room operates this way….. but every single thing in our guest room is a hand-me-down. The furniture used to be Steve’s before we were married. The comforter was his too (which makes it pretty old by now). The lamp- used to be in our bedroom. Okay- the sheets and pillows were new at one point…. but that was oh-so-long ago. So since I am planning on painting and making over the room anyway- I set aside a small part of my small budget to purchase new bedding, and I want to make the room feel special. And inviting!

Now at first I purchased this bedding set online because I thought the crimson and cream would be soothing and serene. But actually, the fabric seemed kind of cheap and I was worried that it wouldn’t stand up to washing over time. Also… I decided that I didn’t love the colors. So now I have my eye on these bedding sets… and want to get your input as to which ones you like… These are all from a company called Echo Designs, and I am in love with their prints…..

I think they are all beautiful- and I am having trouble deciding! But I need to make a decision quickly, because I want to paint the walls to match the bedding… so I can’t buy the paint until I make a decision! So which do you like…. 1, 2, 3, or 4?

My vote is for #3 Sadinia and I would go a grey or taupe on the walls

I am thinking about grey on the walls, but maybe with a pop of a brighter color pulled out of the set as a contrast on the main wall behind the bed.

I like #3 as well. I was torn because I liked #4 too, but didn’t know if going that bold was a good idea, so I chose #3. Thanks for letting us be part of your makeover process.

Maybe I love #4 so much just simply because it is bold! Thanks for voting! :)

Dear Sharon,

Starting with the one you’re getting rid of…..I agree because of the big area of cream, it would show the dirt too much, like if pets jumped up on the bed or luggage, etc.And it’s just not my fav……so on to the others #1 Love it, Gorgeous! But I think for a guest room it may be too busy for the eyes and a little too girly say if just an uncle or a grandpa came to stay. Like if just my dad comes I have something darker colors, etc. We too, live far away from family so the guestroom is something we deal with on a regular basis. # 2 and # 3 I feel the same about overall, there’s enough pattern to hide stuff but not too overwhelming to look at. #4 I guess lots of the people who commented so far aren’t going to agree with me on this one but I think the yellow and coral are too harsh on the eyes. I have a yellow kitchen, and just love it but this shade in the guestroom, I’m thinking no! We have 5 boys and I know you have 6 children but not everyone is used to that amount of activity and noise so we try to keep the guest area calming , soothing and relaxing. Other ideas for hanging storage….a separate hanging rack on a base with wheels so it can be moved around (you could even move it to your room if your getting clothes ready for a trip) or one of those over the door hangers that sticks way out so you would have more space or how about a board on a wall with hooks or maybe add in a clothes tree (coat rack). I also include in that room….a basket of towels and washcloths, small/sample sizes of toiletry items, etc., drying rack (foldable type), local area postcards and or note cards, alarm clock, plastic bags for dirty clothes, a bag or basket empty for them to fill with things to take into the bathroom when they shower, carafe of water and glasses or bottled water and an in room snack basket or have one in the kitchen ( some sort of food if some one is hungry in the night, needs medication with food or is just “snackie” hey we’ve all been there! Also plenty of places to plug things in to charge, since we all live so high tech now.
I think you have impeccable taste and will do a beautifully relaxing retreat, can’t wait to see it. Toodles, Barbi

Hi Sharon #3 is my favorite but I also like #1. Oh and Ken and I would love to visit say for 3 weeks in April (just kidding). I can’t wait to see what it looks like though.

My first thought was #1 and then #3. But looking back over them I think over all I like #3 best. The pattern is bigger and I love the colors. It feels very calm. #1 seems a little feminine. I still like it but not for a guest room,.

Oh this is fun! I have a personal relationship with Echo Design and so I am thrilled to see your choices. My daughter has #3 in her bedroom and it’s beautiful. We also used the decorative pillows shown to kick it up a bit. For paint, we used a celery color which worked really well, but so much can be done with this color palette – good luck!

Dear Sharon,

I like no. 3 (Sadinia) the best, although all the beddings you have chosen are stylish and fresh. Good luck with your project!

I’ve been searching high and low for quality but reasonable bedding for our master bedroom and just haven’t found anything yet…til now! Thanks so much for turning me onto these lovely patterns. I’m just smitten with #3, but I’m not sure it’ll go with our golden-y washed walls, and I really don’t want to repaint just yet. I might just have to try it and see! Good luck choosing…they’re all beautiful. Can’t wait to see before and after photos!
