We all spend money each week buying things that we need- at the grocery store, the pharmacy, Target, WalMart, Amazon…. the list goes on and on. And when we use our dollars- we are actually voting with them. Giving our support to brands, businesses, and companies. Most of the time we are “voting with our dollars” because we like something about the brand- the quality of the product, the price, or the availability. But how often do we take into account the business practices of these companies, and reward those companies who are making moves in the right direction to do some greater good? It can hard to know which companies are “doing the right thing”… ‘cuz who has time to research all of that? No one! But today I am going to share with you one company that I know IS… and that’s Unilever.
If you are like me, you are probably already buying tons of their products- Country Crock, Ragu, Skippy, Wishbone, Lipton, and Breyers just to name a few. And then there’s personal care brands like Degree, Lever 2000, Tresemme, Dove, Q-Tips, and Vaseline. But I bet you didn’t know that all of these labels are part of the Unilever corporation, or about what Unilever is doing to try to alleviate the hunger problem in America. I bet you also didn’t know that….
- One in six Americans does not have access to enough food to sustain a healthy life. ONE IN SIX! That’s 50 million Americans, people.
- This is not a problem just for the homeless, unemployed, or uneducated. Only 10% of the hungry is homeless, and 36% of the hungry live in a household with at least one working adult. And 17% of the hungry have attended college or technical school.
- Lack of adequate nutrition affects the cognitive and behavioral development of children. You can’t learn if your body isn’t properly fed.
One solution to the hunger problem in America are supporting local food banks, where food is donated, inspected, sorted, labeled, and then distributed to those in need via local charities and organizations. Sometimes a person can go directly to the food bank to receive what they need. Feeding America®, is the nation’s largest organization dedicated to fighting domestic hunger, and they do this through a network of food banks. Unilever is involved with Feeding America (as part of Unilever’s sustainable living goal to help one billion people improve their health and well-being), and Unilever’s Cross Off Hunger initiative will donate two million meals to families in need.
And we can show our support by “voting with our dollars” and buying Unilever products.
Start by checking out the Unilever website MakingLifeBetter.com and check out what they are doing for the Feeding America Campaign and you can learn more about the hunger crisis overall and the role that food banks play.
And while we are at it, let’s use the upcoming New Year and our desire to set some new goals to give us the chance to set our own homes in order. Let’s take a look around and see what we can do to be better stewards of our planet…. how can we each do a better job of reducing, re-using, and recycling? I know that I plan to take a hard look at my own family’s efforts and I also plan on filling my shopping cart with Unilever products! And I will be reporting back here early in January with my progress!
Unilever is committed to donating more than two million meals to families in need with Feeding America and every item on your shopping list counts. Show your support by adding Unilever brands to your cart next time you shop. Together we can help to Cross Off Hunger.
