Moms Do More Before 9 am….

Anyone else remember that 1980’s Army commercial? The one that said “The United States Army… We get more done by 9am than most people do all day!”

Now, I mean no disrespect to the fine men and women of the Army… certainly our jobs do not compare. But I will say that they aren’t the only ones who put in a “full day’s work” before the sun has even warmed the sky! So as a tribute to Moms everywhere… here is my Mom-version of this commercial…

And do you know WHY it is that I get so much accomplished before 9am? One reason my friends- I get up pretty stinkin’ early! I set my alarm for 5am every day, even though my oldest child doesn’t need to rise until 6:30am. And those ninety minutes all to myself can completely change the course of my day.  Here’s how…


First and foremost, I now know that if I am going to squeeze a workout into my busy day- it needs to be the first thing that I do. Because once I get the kids off to school- blogging and work obligations seem to start beckoning to me… and whatever good intentions I might have had for myself get overridden by the siren call of the laptop. So if I immediately get out of bed and hop onto the elliptical, or right into a yoga workout- then I get it done.

Check In With The Internet

By 6am with my workout complete, I can spend a few guilt-free minutes checking in with my electronic life. I typically start with making sure my Momof6 post is “live” for the day, and then the number-cruncher in me has to pass by Google Analytics to check out yesterday’s blog stats and see where everyone who stopped by the Momof6 came from…. A referral from Pinterest? Facebook? Perhaps a little Google search led them to my little corner of the blog-o-sphere? I find stats to be exciting and instructive, and doing this little check-in so early in the morning helps to keep me in check and make sure that I don’t geek-out for too long. Next I will stop by Facebook for a little look-see- and on a good day, I’ll spend a few minutes on Pinterest, marveling at all of the beautiful creations and pinning ones that I would like to try someday!

Getting the Kids Ready!

Here is where the multi-tasking begins at its finest. I’ll wake my older son and then perhaps make a quick stop in the laundry room to toss in another load. I’ll then stop by the bathroom to wash all of the kids’ eyeglasses (I’ll never understand why they can’t keep their fingers off of the lenses!), and then check the upstairs table for any homework that a child placed there last night. Heading downstairs, I will prepare my son’s breakfast, and begin prepping all of the other kids’ lunches and school snacks. A quick check of the library list to see who needs to return a book, the “specials” list to see if my kids need to wear their sneakers, and the “music” list to see who needs to carry an instrument to school for a lesson helps me to gather all of the appropriate gear for the day. At some point I will also brew myself a cup of Earl Grey Green Tea…. it’s an absolute requirement. Next I’ll put the first kid on the bus, wake up the next 5, urge them to get dressed, finish preparing all of the lunches and snacks, help the kids pack up their backpacks, comb their hair, check to make sure that they really and truly brushed their teeth, have their shoes on, and that their jackets are all zipped up nice and warm. With luck and a great deal of nagging- they are out the door at 8:15am. Oh- and this is all while doing that Mom-thing we all do of simultaneously picking up random papers, books, toys, plates, napkins, and general clutter- retuning things to their proper locations (or making the kids to do this), and moving everything along… just like… well- just like a drill sergeant! So you see, starting early, having a plan of attack, and keeping a clear head is what allows me to get it all done!
