In our family, the Nintendo DS is the first personal gaming device that any of my kids ever owned. And because we wanted our kids to appreciate the value of how much personal electronics cost, we required them to save their $ from birthday, Christmas, as well as money they earned during special “chores” around the house and in the yard to buy their own DS. (They even had to sign a “usage contract” outlining our rules for the device, but that’s a whole other story!) So I do think that a DS is the perfect “entry-level” device for pre-tween aged kids, before they move on to more expensive “I-devices” that connect to the internet. One of the things that I love the best about the DS is that there are lots of games that are fun, exciting and interesting for kids that don’t involve video-game weaponry, violence, or questionable story lines. And one of my favorite new games is called “Poptropica”!
Poptropica is a creative magical world of islands and people. As you play the game, you can meet people with super powers, travel to space and travel through time. One of your jobs as you travel through Poptropica is to collect artifacts for the Poptropica museum, so that the museum can attract more guests. And of course one of the things that my daughters love best about Poptropica is that you can change your character’s clothes and collect new outfits as you move through the game! You can even earn special rewards clothes! (What little girl wouldn’t love that! Come to think of it- what Mom wouldn’t love that!)

I would love if some day you would share the usage contract–we have done the same when they purchased their DS’es..but usage is a real concern at our house.
We have four children 11,11,13,15 and as they get older they are wanting and needing more electronic and computer time. So it’s a continual battle to balance.
